anneau des anneaux, l'anneau du devenir et du retour?

Jamais encore je n'ai trouvé la femme de qui je voudrais avoir des
enfants, si ce n'est cette femme que j'aime: car je t'aime, ô éternité!

_Hélas, où fit-on sur la terre plus de folies que parmi les
miséricordieux, et qu'est-ce qui fit plus de mal sur la terre que la
folie des miséricordieux?
Malheur à tous ceux qui aiment sans avoir une hauteur qui est au-dessus
de leur pitié!
Ainsi me dit un jour le diable: "Dieu aussi a son enfer: c'est son
amour des hommes."
Et dernièrement je l'ai entendu dire ces mots: "Dieu est mort; c'est sa
pitié des hommes qui a tué Dieu."

- Et de nouveau des mois et des années passèrent sur l'âme de
Zarathoustra et il ne s'en apercevait pas; ses cheveux cependant
devenaient blancs. Un jour qu'il était assis sur une pierre devant sa
caverne, regardant en silence dans le lointain - car de ce point on
voyait la mer, bien loin par-dessus des abîmes tortueux, - ses animaux
pensifs tournèrent autour de lui et finirent par se placer devant lui.

"O Zarathoustra, dirent-ils, cherches-tu des yeux ton bonheur? -
Qu'importe le bonheur, répondit-il, il y a longtemps que je n'aspire
plus au bonheur, j'aspire à mon oeuvre. - O Zarathoustra, reprirent
derechef les animaux, tu dis cela comme quelqu'un qui est saturé de
bien. N'es-tu pas couché dans un lac de bonheur teinté d'azur? -
Petits espiègles, répondit Zarathoustra en souriant, comme vous avez
bien choisi la parabole! Mais vous savez aussi que mon bonheur est
lourd et qu'il n'est pas comme une vague mobile: il me pousse et il ne
veut pas s'en aller de moi, adhérent comme de la poix fondue." -

Alors ses animaux pensifs tournèrent derechef autour de lui, et de
nouveau ils se placèrent devant lui. "O Zarathoustra, dirent-ils,
c'est donc à cause de cela que tu deviens toujours plus jaune et plus
foncé, quoique tes cheveux se donnent des airs

Grounds are not wanting, to be sure, upon which the Germans of to-day may adduce this fact to their credit: unhappily for one who in this matter is fashioned and mentored in an un-German school! This _German_ book, which has found its readers in a wide circle of lands and peoples--it has been some ten years on its rounds--and which must make its way by means of any musical art and tune that will captivate the foreign ear as well as the native--this book has been read most indifferently in Germany itself and little heeded there: to what is that due? "It requires too much," I have been told, "it addresses itself to men free from the press of petty obligations, it demands fine and trained perceptions, it requires a surplus, a surplus of time, of the lightness of heaven and of the heart, of otium in the most unrestricted sense: mere good things that we Germans of to-day have not got and therefore cannot give.

It is because we have for thousands of years looked into the world with moral, aesthetic, religious predispositions, with blind prejudice, passion or fear, and surfeited ourselves with indulgence in the follies of illogical thought, that the world has gradually become so wondrously motley, frightful, significant, soulful: it has taken on tints, but we have been the colorists: the human intellect, upon the foundation of human needs, of human passions, has reared all these "phenomena" and injected its own erroneous fundamental conceptions into things.

This new, conscious civilization is killing the other which, on the whole, has led but an unreflective animal and plant life: it is also destroying the doubt of progress itself--progress is possible.
